There is a reason infinity pools stop people in their tracks. That seamless edge where water appears to dissolve into the horizon — whether it is the ocean, the Miami skyline, or simply an open sky — creates a visual effect unlike anything else in residential design.

But behind that effortless beauty is a precise piece of engineering. Understanding how an infinity pool actually works will help you decide whether it is the right choice for your property — and what to expect from the build process.

The Core Principle: Controlled Overflow

An infinity pool — also called a vanishing edge pool or negative edge pool — works by allowing water to flow continuously over one or more edges of the pool. That edge is built slightly lower than the water level, so water spills over it in a thin, even sheet.

From the right viewing angle, you cannot see where the pool ends. The water appears to continue forever.

The Four Key Components

1. The Overflow Edge

This is the wall built lower than the water surface — typically by just half an inch to an inch. The precision here matters enormously. An uneven overflow edge creates an uneven water sheet, which breaks the visual illusion. 2. The Catch Basin (Surge Tank)

Directly below the overflow edge sits a catch basin — a secondary reservoir that collects all the water that flows over the edge. This basin needs to be large enough to hold the volume of water displaced when bathers enter the pool, plus the water that drains when the pump is off.

The catch basin is typically hidden from view, built into the hillside or structure beneath the pool. On flat properties, it is often concealed behind a retaining wall or below a deck.

3. The Recirculation Pump

A dedicated pump continuously pulls water from the catch basin and returns it to the main pool. This pump runs constantly while the pool is in use. The flow rate must be carefully calibrated — too slow and the overflow edge runs dry in spots; too fast and the water sheet becomes turbulent and noisy.

4. The Filtration System

Infinity pools require a more robust filtration setup than standard pools. Because the catch basin collects debris along with the overflow water, the filtration system must handle a higher load. Most infinity pool builds include a dedicated filter for the catch basin circuit.

What Makes Infinity Pools More Complex to Build

Standard pools are essentially watertight containers. Infinity pools are dynamic hydraulic systems. That distinction has real implications:

Site requirements are stricter. Infinity pools work best on elevated or sloped properties where the overflow edge faces an open view. On flat lots, the effect can still be achieved, but it requires more structural engineering to create the necessary elevation difference.

The structural engineering is more involved. The overflow wall must be engineered to handle constant water pressure and the weight of the catch basin below. Soil conditions, drainage, and load-bearing capacity all factor into the design.

Leveling is critical. As mentioned above, the overflow edge must be perfectly level. Even a small variance — a fraction of an inch — will cause water to pool on one side of the edge and run dry on the other, destroying the visual effect.

Ongoing maintenance is more demanding. More components mean more to maintain. The catch basin, secondary pump, and additional filtration all require regular attention.

  • Elevated lots with a clear sightline from the pool toward an open view
  • Waterfront properties where the pool edge can appear to merge with the water beyond
  • Properties with a natural grade change that makes concealing the catch basin straightforward

Flat lots in dense neighborhoods can still accommodate an infinity pool, but the engineering is more complex and the visual payoff may be less dramatic.
