Understanding Florida's Unique Challenges
Heat Accelerates Chemical Consumption
In South Florida, water temperatures regularly exceed 85°F in summer. Warm water accelerates the breakdown of chlorine and other sanitizers, meaning you'll need to test and adjust chemistry more frequently than pool owners in cooler climates.
A general rule: test your water at least twice a week during summer months, and consider a stabilized chlorine product (cyanuric acid) to slow UV degradation.
Rain Dilutes and Unbalances Your Water
South Florida's rainy season (June through October) brings heavy, frequent downpours that can significantly dilute your pool's chemistry. After any substantial rain event, test your water and adjust accordingly. Heavy rain also introduces organic matter, debris, and contaminants that can fuel algae growth.
UV Exposure is Extreme
The Florida sun is relentless. UV rays break down chlorine rapidly, which is why a stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is essential. However, too much stabilizer creates "chlorine lock" — a condition where chlorine is present but ineffective. Maintain cyanuric acid levels between 30–50 ppm.
Essential Chemistry Parameters
Keep these levels in range at all times:
- Free Chlorine: 1–3 ppm (shock to 10 ppm after heavy use or rain)
- pH: 7.4–7.6 (the most critical parameter)
- Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm (buffers pH swings)
- Cyanuric Acid: 30–50 ppm
- Calcium Hardness: 200–400 ppm (prevents surface etching)
- Salt (if saltwater): 2,700–3,400 ppm
Algae Prevention: The #1 Maintenance Priority
Algae is the most common pool problem in South Florida, and it's almost always preventable. Green algae blooms can turn a clear pool murky overnight in warm weather.
Prevention strategies:
- Maintain proper chlorine levels consistently — don't let them drop
- Brush pool walls and floor weekly to disrupt algae before it takes hold
- Run your pump and filter for at least 8–10 hours per day in summer
- Shock the pool weekly during peak season
- Use an algaecide as a preventive supplement, not just a treatment
If you do get algae, act immediately. A mild bloom can be cleared in 24–48 hours with aggressive shocking and brushing. A severe bloom may require draining and acid washing.
Filtration: Your Pool's Immune System
Your filter is doing the heavy lifting of keeping your water clear. In Florida's conditions, it needs to work harder than average.
Sand filters are common and low-maintenance, but they're less efficient than other options. Backwash when pressure rises 8–10 psi above normal.
Cartridge filters offer better filtration and are easier to clean, but require more frequent attention. Clean cartridges every 2–4 weeks during heavy use.
DE (Diatomaceous Earth) filters provide the finest filtration and are ideal for South Florida conditions. They require backwashing and recharging with DE powder.
Run your pump during the hottest part of the day when algae growth is most active — typically 10 AM to 6 PM.
Seasonal Considerations
Summer (June–October)
This is your highest-maintenance period. Increased use, heavy rain, and extreme heat all stress your pool's chemistry. Test twice weekly, shock after every major rain event, and run your pump longer.
Winter (November–March)
South Florida winters are mild, but water temperatures do drop. Algae growth slows, and chemical consumption decreases. You can reduce pump run time slightly, but don't neglect testing — cold snaps can still cause chemistry swings.
Hurricane Season
Before a storm, lower your water level slightly to accommodate rainfall, remove loose items from the pool area, and add extra algaecide. After the storm, remove debris promptly, test and rebalance chemistry, and run the pump continuously until water clears.
When to Call a Professional
